Strong magnets - practical helpers in the office

Various round and square magnets made of metal in silver and green for office and household.

Everyone has probably already worked with magnets, and they are studied more intensively in physics lessons at school at the latest. They stick to metal surfaces such as fridges, magnetic boards, flipcharts, metal cabinets or metal strips. You will find two types of magnets in our range: The ferrite magnet and the neodymium magnet. The latter is slightly more expensive, but has more adhesive force for the same size. Our magnets are available in many different shapes, such as round magnets, cone magnets, cube magnets or rod magnets, which are particularly handy and easy to handle. Flat magnets or ring magnets, on the other hand, have the advantage of being very discreet and hardly noticeable. Coloured magnets are helpful, for example, to better identify information hangers, while chrome-plated design magnets are very stylish and decorative. Hook magnets are suitable for keeping objects in place and saving space. A key can be given a permanent place here or an apron can be hung up. Our magnets are the result of a great deal of expert knowledge and high quality standards. We manufacture some of our magnets directly at our site in Germany, paying attention to socially responsible and environmentally friendly production. Our magnets range from low adhesive forces for attaching light photos or pictures to professional applications for workshops and warehouses with an adhesive force of up to 30 kg. Feel free to browse through our versatile range, you are sure to quickly come up with many application ideas, whether for private or professional use.

We come across a whole host of different magnets every day. However, we often don't even notice these useful all-rounders. For example, there are several magnets in every PC. They can also be found in loudspeakers, telephones, headphones and doorbells. Magnetism and magnetisation are phenomena that accompany us unconsciously in many areas. The situation is different in the office, of course - it is quite clear that magnets are important aids here. Whether for lectures, presentations on magnetic boards, training courses or use in meetings - permanent magnets, as magnets that do not lose their adhesive force are called, are simply a must. We offer strong magnets in various designs in our shop - take a look around and find out which magnets are best suited for your project.

Where are magnets used in the office?

Magnets prove to be real helpers in the office. They are suitable for hanging up important notes or documents by magnetising them, especially on magnetic boards. Office magnets are tools that can be used to quickly and visibly hang up and move documents, making work noticeably easier. As magnets come in different shapes, sizes and colours, there are automatically many different possible uses and areas of application. Magnets are often found in the office on the whiteboard or blackboard. Magnetic sheets are also frequently used in the office and can be supplemented with super magnets, which are particularly strong neodymium magnets.

Apart from the office, however, there are other areas of application where magnets make a strong impression. For example, if you opt for a magnet with a carousel hook, you can hang up keys or other small items. In this way, the magnet can help to keep things organised in the entrance area or hallway. These properties are certainly also the reason why this type of magnet or magnet system can be found more and more often in the kitchen, bathroom or even the study. However, magnets are also used to attach work or warning notices, for example, in work areas where things are a little more vigorous and fast-paced, such as in catering establishments, workshops and production halls.

What are neodymium, ferrite & AlNiCo magnets made of?

Permanent magnets or super magnets made of NdFeB (neodymium iron boron), ferrite and AlNiCo (aluminium, nickel, cobalt) are available in many different sizes and shapes. The fact is that all types of magnets are characterised by different features and properties. You can find particularly strong magnets in our MAUL shop. These strong magnets are particularly suitable as office magnets. This is usually due to the fact that the materials from which they are made differ significantly. We present the most common magnets in brief below.

Ferrite magnets

Most people know the so-called "ferrite magnets" as fridge magnets. They are the most popular and most widely used permanent magnets worldwide. Ferrite magnets are resistant to heat and corrosion. As they do not require a coating, they are usually dark grey. They come in a wide variety of shapes:

  • Square magnets
  • Disc magnets
  • Ring magnets
  • Pot magnets

AlNiCo magnet

AlNiCo magnets usually achieve a low adhesive force, which is why they are not in high demand. Another disadvantage is their low magnetisation. However, aluminium-nickel-cobalt magnets have the advantage that they are available in sophisticated shapes. The horseshoe magnet is particularly well known. However, there are a number of other designs.

Neodymium magnets

Neodymium magnets are the strongest magnets on the market. The so-called super magnets are correspondingly popular. Neodymium is a rare earth metal - a very special material. Together with boron and iron, it can be used to produce one of the strongest permanent magnets. Neodymium magnets are available in a wide variety of forms:

  • Disc magnets
  • Square magnets
  • Cube magnets
  • Ball magnets
  • Rod magnets
  • Ring magnets
  • Pot magnets

The special nickel-copper-nickel coating is the reason for the attractive appearance. The silver alloy is a real eye-catcher. These magnets are characterised above all by their super-strong adhesive force. In addition, their dimensions mean that they can always be used even where space is limited. Even the smallest neodymium magnets are as strong as larger but conventionally manufactured magnets.

Ferrite or neodymium magnets?

In principle, there is no general answer to the question of which magnet is right for you. The applications you plan to use it for are relevant. The heavier the object you want to hang up, the more adhesive force you will need. However, the surface must also be taken into account, so you will need a stronger magnet on particularly thin metallic surfaces or on smooth surfaces. Ferrite magnets are cheaper to buy than neodymium magnets. If you are planning a small, light project, then ferrite magnets are definitely a good choice. They are the classic everyday and office magnets and are available in many colours. They can also withstand temperatures above 80 °C and are even suitable for outdoor use to a certain extent. For heavier objects or if you value aesthetics and a special variety of shapes, you are well advised to use a neodymium magnet. Neodymium magnets have a very strong adhesive force even with small dimensions, which makes them discreet and, thanks to the usually shiny silver surface, they blend into any environment and look very modern.

Ferrite and neodymium in direct comparison

Comparison table shows the properties of blue ferrite and green neodymium magnets with ratings for adhesive force, price and durability.

When is the use of ferrite magnets worthwhile?

  • When the budget is particularly tight
  • When temperatures of over 80 °C are involved
  • If the aesthetic requirements are low
  • For outdoor applications

What pulling force should a neodymium magnet have?

  • If a particularly strong adhesive force is required
  • When a low weight is important
  • When space is limited
  • If the appearance plays a decisive role

What do I need to consider with self-adhesive magnets and magnetic tapes?

If you decide to use self-adhesive magnets or magnetic tapes, you must first and foremost prepare the surface accordingly. You should always proceed thoroughly to ensure perfect adhesion. The following aspects are crucial:

  • Make sure the surface is dust-free and clean. Ideally, clean the surface thoroughly and then allow it to dry completely.
  • The adhesive of the self-adhesive magnet can only adhere if it is in full contact with the surface. This means that the smoother the surface, the better the result.
  • You should only remove the protective film immediately before applying the magnet, otherwise the adhesive will dry out and not be fully effective.
  • Do not touch the adhesive surface with your fingers.
  • There are surfaces that are not suitable. These include plastics. This is because the adhesive can come loose under load.
  • Suitable substrates are: uncoated and coated cardboard, laser printer paper, Plexiglas, acrylic glass and wood.
  • Finally, you must ensure that the adhesive dries thoroughly after application. This can take up to 72 hours. Only then is the optimum adhesive performance achieved. After that, you can put unlimited weight on the self-adhesive magnet.
  • The best temperature for drying is between 21 and 38 °C.

What can magnetic tapes be used for?

Magnetic tapes with strong adhesive force can basically be used anywhere. The magnetic tape impresses with a higher adhesive effect and self-adhesive properties. Magnetic tapes, magnetic sheets and magnetic strips are available in many different sizes, colours and shapes. It is very practical that you can cut the magnetic tapes to size as required.

In addition to self-adhesive magnetic tapes - one side magnetic and the other self-adhesive - there are also labelling tapes that are also magnetic on one side but can be written on like a whiteboard on the other. It can be used in schools, offices, kitchens or cellars. The tape is labelled with non-permanent markers and the writing can then be easily removed again if required. This magnetic tape proves to be an all-rounder in many situations thanks to the changeable labelling. The coloured magnetic tape can also be cut to size individually.

We realise that there are products, such as our magnetic tapes, that work like a magnet themselves. We also have ferro tape in our range, which is a tape that can be stuck to pretty much any surface and has a metallic surface on the front, which has the advantage that magnets can be attached there. Therefore, do not confuse a ferrous tape holds magnets but a magnetic tape is itself like a magnet. You must pay attention to this when ordering.
